“Recently Glebe Sustainability was invited to participate in a webinar about the rollout of “FOGO Bins”.
We are sharing some of the key points FYI below.
Background and what is FOGO?
NSW has a state wide mandate from the EPA (NSW Environment Protection Authority) for Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) recycling, to reduce food waste and stop food waste going to landfill.
Timeline: up to 2030 State wide
Councils will introduce this new step and advise residents on FO and FOGO bin changes and collection and distribution of new bins over time
Local councils will be required to provide all NSW households who receive a residual (red lid) waste collection service with a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) waste service by 1 July 2030.
To support this, the EPA has established Scrap Together – a community education program to help councils make the most of FOGO.
Environmental benefit:
Compost made from kerbside food and garden organics has significant environmental benefits.
One of the most significant ways councils can reduce waste to landfill and act on climate change is to divert food and garden waste.
Providing FOGO services reduces landfill volumes and associated greenhouse gas emissions, recovers nutrients for high value reuse within a circular economy, increases production of compost which improves soil health, increases water retention and boosts crop yields and more
